In four years' time, our new Ford inventory in Glasgow will be joined by four new SUV nameplates. What are they going to look like? We're not sure, but we could hazard a few guesses.

The reason Ford is expanding an already rich lineup of SUVs that covers all major classes from the compact Ford Escape to the full-size Ford Expedition is simple: families.

The millennial age group, children of the baby boomers, is massive, and this year there are more men and women in their mid-twenties than any other age.

According to Mark LaNeve, Ford Motor Company vice president of Marketing, Sales and Service, millennials entering their prime child-rearing years is "a leading indicator of more SUV sales." Even before having children, when millennials simply start to plan for a family, their interest in the SUV segment rises.

So, we may see increased focus on vehicles that appeal to millennials, rich with family-oriented features. Whether that means more full-size SUVs, or perhaps a versatile subcompact, your guess is as good as ours.
